For this project in Sydney’s Inner West, in the Darlington heritage conservation area, the front building replaced a derelict corner shop/ terrace, one of a pair with the shop across the street. The large front room with wide translucent windows is a home office, to sit with the shop front opposite, and the tall rooms at the front are to increase the scale at the corner.
A dramatic cut in the plan admits light to the middle of the house. The living areas at the rear of the house open to a north facing courtyard.
The privacy of the courtyard is protected from the neighbouring pub by a compact studio – one storey plus mezzanine – built over the garage.
