In Glebe, in the Inner West of Sydney, a double-fronted detached house is transformed with a substantial two-storey addition opening to the garden. The problem to be resolved was how to add a two-storey addition to a single-story house without impacting on the heritage streetscape and the neighbouring gardens. The old house is renewed for contemporary family life by moving the living areas to open to the rear garden, and through the use of sustainable strategies such as good cross-ventilation, gas-boosted solar hot water, a rainwater re-use tank beneath the garage, recycled blackbutt floorboards and recycled spotted gum cladding. Light without heat or glare is drawn into the interior via a series of clerestorey windows, skylights and screened openings to the upper level. In the words of our clients: The design Peter ultimately submitted to us was excellent – it reflected what we wanted and was both tasteful and refined. The ultimate product of Peter's hard work is a home that we are delighted to arrive at each and every day.
